Understanding the Whirling Dervishes

The Whirling Dervishes, or Mevlevi Order, represent one of the most profound spiritual traditions in Islamic mysticism. Founded in the 13th century by followers of the great Persian poet and Sufi mystic Jalal ad-Din Muhammad Rumi, the practice combines philosophy, poetry, music, and dance into a moving meditation.

The white robes symbolize the ego's shroud, the tall felt hat represents the ego's tombstone, and the whirling itself represents spiritual ascent through love and abandonment of the ego. Each rotation is a prayer, each spin a step closer to divine truth.

During the ceremony, dervishes extend their right hands toward heaven to receive God's beneficence and their left hands toward earth to transmit these blessings. The ceremony is not entertainment but a form of dhikr (remembrance of God), a meditative practice central to Sufism.

Whether you’re a spiritual seeker, a history enthusiast, or simply curious about Turkish culture, this ceremony is an unforgettable experience. The graceful movements, music, and profound symbolism make it one of the most unique cultural experiences in Istanbul. The one I visited is a humble location of some local school, but the ceremoby itself is pretty authentic. I heard the one at Sirkeci Train Station ex Orient Express train give better and bigger place.

I read some of the reviews saying this was not worth the visit and I’d like to disagree. I’ve seen Sufi dancers in other countries, and this seemed like a much smaller, intimate experience. We were seated promptly upon arrival, and we were offered tea and water. You’re allowed to get up and move during the performance, which those with their big cameras and phones seemed to enjoy. I really liked that the show from beginning to end was one hour, and the venue is surrounded by restaurants, which made it easy for us to have dinner right before this and make an evening of it.

The location was very good and the performance itself was quite interesting. At first there is accompanying music; perhaps for 20 minutes or so; then the 3 dancers came on stage. They perform some introduction rituals and then dance for maybe 30 minutes or so - but this was probably long enough. An hour in total, which was more than enough for us; but still gave a good insight into this Turkish traditional performance.
