Understanding the Whirling Dervishes
The Whirling Dervishes, or Mevlevi Order, represent one of the most profound spiritual traditions in Islamic mysticism. Founded in the 13th century by followers of the great Persian poet and Sufi mystic Jalal ad-Din Muhammad Rumi, the practice combines philosophy, poetry, music, and dance into a moving meditation.
The white robes symbolize the ego's shroud, the tall felt hat represents the ego's tombstone, and the whirling itself represents spiritual ascent through love and abandonment of the ego. Each rotation is a prayer, each spin a step closer to divine truth.
During the ceremony, dervishes extend their right hands toward heaven to receive God's beneficence and their left hands toward earth to transmit these blessings. The ceremony is not entertainment but a form of dhikr (remembrance of God), a meditative practice central to Sufism.
